amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Hi All, Recently upgraded the main dns server from Server 2008 to Server 2012 r2 but now when I remote desktop to the other 2008 server the login time literally takes about 5 minutes.. but once I am logged on all is ok. Any ideas what could be causing the long login time when using remote desktop. Thanks
djm968 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Does it take as long if you RDP to the IP address of the 2008 server?
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 Yea still takes just as long if I use the ip address
djm968 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Have you changed the DNS settings on the 2008 sever? Is DNS still pointing to itself? You may need to flush the DNS resolver cache on the sever and the workstation you are using to RDP to it.
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 I have changed the dns settings on the 2008 server to point to the new 2012 server.
djm968 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 (edited) Definitely seems to be DNS related... have you tried flushing the DNS ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns Edited March 17, 2017 by djm968
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 Would you say so despite it still taking as long via ip address? Will give that a go.
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 tried flushing the dns and re registering it but still taking just as long.
djm968 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Does it take as long to log on if you use a local admin account or another domain admin account?
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 All is good if I use a local admin account
tinca492 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 this may be a bit off the wall...but whats the size of your downloads folder? I recently had similar problems as I forgot that I had downloaded a number of ISOs from the volume licencing center (around 8GB) Is it worth checking for size of profile that is being loaded? otherwise I would agree with DNS issues, have you checked forwarders etc are all correct and in the correct order
amartin Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 There was only a couple of items in the download folder nothing major. DNS forwarders are correct and in the correct order.. any other ideas?
amartin Posted March 20, 2017 Author Posted March 20, 2017 Still suffering this issue.. so the consensus is its a DNS issue?
tinca492 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Have you checked everything on the client machine that you are trying to connect from? The usual stuff clear temp files, check adaptor settings netmask etc, cleared all references too the old ip, flush local dns cache, etc does ipconfig /all throw up any random clues? does it ping and tracert ok? are LAN switch ports configured correctly? DHCP settings? Firwall settings I would be tempted to forget all that you have done todate, treat as a new issue and start from the basics, hence does it ping ok etc etc? Is there anyone else on site who could have a look at the problem with fresh eyes? aT least it sounds like the problem is consistent rather than intermittant Good luck
