Smart watch with GPS

What would the esteemed masses recommend for my 15yo daughter? She would like a smart watch that has gps tracking for when she's out riding her horse (she wants to track where she goes for her DofE) but like the cheap skate I am I don't want to spend much on it as she'll probably stop using it/lose it anyway...

I'm probably just being old and boring, but why would a gps watch be better than an app on her phone?

Thanks for the links. We are thinking watch as she does a lot of cross country eventing and doesn't take her phone out with her... I know kids huh, wasn't like that in my day either!!
