we have had a ticket come in about a number of pcs in one of the suites saying the ie icon in the quick launch tray has broken as says can't find iexplore.exe

I have also had it in a classroom in another part of the network doing the same.

Anyone know if this is a windows update that's done this or something else and how to solve.

Deleting profiles might work but if it keeps happening I want to know what's caused it for a permanent fix.

Firstly there's no quick launch tray any more, well, it might still be at %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch but that's probably not what you're talking about.

So a) log in as that user and test, where is the shortcut pointing to? Is iexplore.exe actually there? permission issue?

b) does deleting the profile fix it?

My pinned IE shortcuts on my Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines are both still OK. The Windows 7 machines (Fully on the network and integrated with AD, and SCCM) have their non-critical updates delayed by two weeks.

I have had no reports from any of my users describing a problem like this (and they would!)
