3D Printer - Health and Safety / Location?

Hi guys,

 

We're looking at our first 3D printer, but I was just wondering if anyone could offer me some advice / info about where you located it and if you've made a risk assessment for it (and would kindly share as a template ) given their risk for causing fires and the recommendation for the long prints to be overseen, and the noisy printing (or so I've heard?). I feel like we're in a bit of a pickle as we're being pushed to purchase one from above, but don't really have anywhere suitable to locate it as far as I can tell. The first suggestion was with the servers...

I think CLEAPPS have model risk assessments for 3d printers. Ask your science or DT techs if they have access. Other than the fire, electrical and mechanical risks, there is some concern over fumes produced from heating the filaments (assuming you are talking FDM not DLP resin). Ideally they should be operated in a vented enclosure in the same way as a laser cutter.

Yeah, I've searched but most seem to be for bigger deployments or industrial sized printers. I suppose I should have been clearer: I'd like to know where others are placing their small (Makerbot-sized printers) and what risks / control measures they've applied to counter them. I'm a complete 3D printing noob, so I don't know how much of what I'm finding (i.e nanoparticles) applies to small 3D printers, and regardless of the H&S I'd still like to know where others are placing them.

I keep mine in my office. When I'm using it I open my window a bit and prop open the door I know that it won't get interfered with then!

Our Makerbot 3D printer is kept and operated in the D&T workshop which adjoins the classrooms along with the Laser cutter, welding kit, air compressor stuff, etc.

 

Noise-wise its hardly much noisier than a photocopier, less of a fire risk than the laser cutter or welding kit, doesn't give off any noxious fumes and no special measures required for the plastic waste as far as I am aware. Normally its the responsibility of the D&T technician to look after it.

During open evenings, etc, its usually put out on display in the Sports Hall or somewhere doing demo's for parents and visitors. So long as you are sensible with it and it is kept under some supervision while in use there shouldn't be any need for any special measures as far as I know.

ABS gives off styrene which is possibly carcinogenic. PLA can give off fumes also, it depends on the composition.

Ventilation is recommended. It doesn't want to be in a draft from something like an open window as it could cause layer issues.
