Exchange 2013 to Office 365 migration

Hello All,

 

We are planning to move office 365 from exchange 2013. I was wondering if anyone has created a deployment guide or point to the right direction to download it.

 

I have been searching online but unable to find any new guide regarding deployment.

As far as I can see there is no quick fire way of doing it, create new accounts on 365. Then in Outlook on the Exchange accounts export to PST. New Mail Profile, add 365 account and import PST.

 

Please enlighten me if anyone knows of a better way.

Loads of better ways. Just a few are:

 

1. Hybrid setup and migrate the mailboxes using the built in tools. This will allow you to have users on both systems at the same time. The migration itself is fairly quickly. I migrated 2,000 mailboxes in a day.

2. IMAP migration.

3. Export the PST in bulk from Exchange using powershell and import them to office 365 using the import service. https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/Use-network-upload-to-import-PST-files-to-Office-365-103f940c-0468-4e1a-b527-cc8ad13a5ea6?ui=en-US&rs=en-GB&ad=GB

ahhh thanks, though... I don't often use 365. Messagstream mainly so I wonder whether the import service would still work.

Do you mean the Office 365 importer service? It does work, I used it last week.

Hybrid strikes me as the best choice, it forces you to have all the moving parts working correctly (this is a good thing) and then gives you time to move all the mailboxes with the standard migration tools at your leisure, eventually leaving you with an on-prem SMTP server that can accept mail from other on-prem devices and route them to the office365 mailboxes etc (e.g. photocopiers etc).

I have migrated around 10 schools now, I have found the best way is use a cutover migration. You will an external IP that forwards to your onsite exchange server and a valid cerificate.

 

But otherwise It is striaght forward to implement. No need to create user accounts in the cloud, everything is synced over to office 365 on a 24 hour schedule simply change the MX record when ready and re-configure outlook.

I would manage on AD. Means you don't have to do the same thing twice. You create a user in AD and they then appear in Office 365. If you rename etc it automatically syncs.
