Office 365 Retention period - cost?

Hi All,

 

I am looking to change the default retention period on our 365 tenancy but have been told that there may be the requirement of another license to extend this past 30 days. is this right? or has anybody hear of anything similar. We are going to try and get a backup solution in place to back up all of the mailboxes however I wanted to do this as the first level of protection and a bit of a safety net.
