WSUS Server Problems

I thought i would check my wsus server this morning to see what new updates were available. I double clicked the desktop shortcut to be told that the mmc was created in a new version or something, so i downloaded the latest version from the MS website. Restarted server and double clicked the icon and it is now asking me to connect to a server so i put its own name in the box and it errors saying

 

"Cannot connect to 'SERVER-NAME'. the remote server could not be contacted. Please verify that IIS on the server is correctly configured and is running. Contact your network administrator if the prolem persists."

 

Even though it is the local machine i have tried putting the server name and localhost, connecting via port 80, 8080 (ISA) and 443.

 

I have restarted the 'Update Services' and 'IIS Admin' services.

 

I tried to remove it and re-install but it errored. It now dosent list it in add/remove programs and when i try and re-install it from the MS website it starts the setup as an unisntall setup but then proceeds to error again.

 

I am confused as to what to do next

i get "HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found"

The problem does appear to be with IIS6 - presuming you're running 2003 Server?

 

Although the WSUS and IIS services are running, you need to go into IIS and check the WSUSPool (under Application Pools) is running and also that Default Websites (under Website) is also running, unless you've installed WSUS as a website on its own.

Nope they were both there and running in IIS.

 

After it not appearing in add/remove programs i thought i would restart the server and try installing it again and it is now letting me through the setup ok but its asking for sql database.

 

 

EDIT: sorry ignore this i was ticking to install a full install again rather than just the admin console! I am haing a really bad morning! This server has a Microsoft SQL server folder so how can i add a new one! Sorry but have had to setup a SQL database before:o

If you're running 2003 Server, let it install/configure the Windows Internal Database.

 

It does seems odd that WSUS isn't showing up in Add/Remove programs. I hope everything else is ok on your server?

Right let me get head straight

 

Were i am now:

 

- Showing up again in add/remove

- Back to the same error as in first post

- WSUS pool is running in IIS

- Default website running in IIS

- Me about to jump out of office window and down the pub!!

Did you install WSUS in the default website or its own website? And are you using WSUS 2.0 or WSUS 3.0?

So if you click Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0

 

What happens?

I get the mmc window for WSUS but it cant find the server i have to click connect to server on the right. Pic attached

As you're using the Default Website, the port should be 80. In the Server field, try entering either the server IP or its FQDN.

Do you use IIS for any other applications or indeed a website? The error is pointing to a port problem.

 

Within IIS, choose Web Sites > Default Web Site. Right click Default Web Site and choose Properties.

 

The IP Address should be set to (All Unassigned); TCP Port: 80; SSL Port: Blank

Nope IIS is not used on this server at all its the second DC and thats it. Attached is a pic of IIS and what is in the default website.

Within IIS, choose Web Sites. Right click Web Sites and choose Properties, select the Service tab.

 

Untick Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode. Then apply changes.

 

If this works, was the server upgraded from Windows 2000 to 2003?

Already unticked. It was a brand new server about 18 months ago and is still on its origanal 2003 install.

Having a similar problem where none of the clients will find the server. But I have just realised that our WSUS server has Wamp5 also running on it.

 

Would this stop clients from seeing the WSUS?

Can you download and install the SQL 2005 Service Manager?

 

Then run SQL 2005 Service Manager and it should appear in the notification area (near your clock, bottom right). Right click it and choose 'Open SQL2005 Service Manager'.

 

Choose the instance severname\Microsoft##SSEE. Is it running? If it isn't, start it and then try running WSUS 3.0.

It won't let me install the service manager but I do have SQL Server Configuration Manager on it.

 

There are 3 services running, 1 is an SQL Server for a dyslexia diagnosis/testing program, 1 is Microsoft internal database (MICROSOFT##SSEE), and the other is an SQL Server Browser.

 

So the service is running, the dyslexia program works fine, the classroom booking system works fine but WSUS can't be seen by any clients

 

 

Also just checked the protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE and they are as follows

 

Shared Memory ENABLED

Named Pipes DISABLED

TCP/IP DISABLED

VIA DISABLED
