What versions of linux should I use for a server and client? What is the linux version of active directory? Thanks.... oh and if anyone has any links to downloads of said software that would be fantastical!!

Wait till you've seend Beryl / compiz.... prepare to be amazed. If teachers didn't buy windows only software, I'd be using Linux as the network OS here. 1

dhicks Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 What versions of linux should I use for a server and client? Probably Ubuntu/Edubuntu, there's lots of Wiki's and help available. What is the linux version of active directory? LDAP. Installing software in Linux is generally a case of installing "packages". Ubuntu has a package manager tool for this - just click on the package you want and then click "install". I have OpenLDAP installed, with PHPLDAPAdmin presenting a nice web-based management interface. The Ubuntu install CD will give you the option of installing a "LAMP" server - Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. This is an all-in-one setup to have a web server installed and ready to go - probably a good idea. oh and if anyone has any links to downloads of said software that would be fantastical!! Even more fantastical-er, Ubuntu will actually ship you free CDs, they're just that nice :-) You probably just want to download the Ubuntu LiveCD though - it's a demo and install CD all-in-one. Simply download the ISO file from Ubuntu's site, burn it to CD and boot your machine with it. -- David Hicks 1

That's the clever thing... it's the same OS, you just install different packages (and probably leave out the GUI). You do need to check out Karoshi too (click the banner!) or LinuxGirlie will hunt you down!!!
Joanne Posted February 29, 2008 Author Posted February 29, 2008 well i've had them on for an hour and i don't like the command line! I want GUI! Will I have to install it? I'm clueless when it comes to linux. My NM says I needs to research sysprep anyway, so might have to do the Server 2003 thing!
Geoff Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 If you want a linux server with a GUI I suggest you install webmin. However in the long term it's in your best interested to learn the command line. I mean, you'll have to for Windows 2k8 server core anyway, so whats the difference?
