At the moment the school is requesting that an IT tech remains present for every ECDL exam to deal with any problems that might arise. Is this normal?

We did this for the first few tests, but once confidence was gained in the tests and the hardware they were taking it on, we dropped to phone support when necessary.

Once you get the tests going it shouldn't be necessary. Almost every issue can be sorted by clearing the current question or refreshing the browser. When it has crashed at my school it has always resumed automatically.

For online tests we do as already mentioned; an IT presence for the first couple until the invigilators see how easy it is, then phone support thereafter.

The staff who teach aren't allowed to invigilate...

The staff who teach are allowed to be present for tech support however.

Worth bearing in mind.

Nope - we did the first couple of times just so we (IT) could see how the invigilators and kids got on, but thereafter it's phone support, same as any other exam.
