Gmail to Office 365 migration

Hi All,

 

We have another GAFE school to migrate over to Office 365. In the past we've had an issue with Gmail using labels instead of folders which means when migrating using IMAP if a email has 2 labels it will migrate that email twice. As you can imagine this is a bit of a pain where a 5GB mailbox goes up to 7GB because of duplicate emails.

 

EDIT: Forgot to mention we already know about excluding the [gmail] folder

 

Does anyone know a way around this?

"Better" is pretty subjective depending on your needs and i'd appreciate if we stayed on topic and didn't make this thread into a Google vs Microsoft

I would be interested in your reasoning as we are looking at which way to jump as we will have to at some point. Everything we have looked at so far has shown G Suite is more mature and configurable. The only thing I really like about O365 so far is ADFS, GSPS just seems a bit flaky.

trying to bring it back on track for you. It depends on the migraiton tool that you are using and how intelligent it is see those labels. Which one are you using?

Appreciate it, I was just using the in built imap with office 365. Without buying into a 3rd party product I'm guessing we would have to live with the duplicate emails.

today i have seen a new feature being added to the Office 365 Admin Centre for migrations. I font see it in all our tenants yet but in admin do you see Setup? under there you will see Data migration and you will see Gmail as an option.

Looks like it's still using IMAP.

 

What's hilarious is IMAP supports labels, called keywords or flags, Deflexion.com: Server-Side Message Labels

 

And also Google IMAP supports labels in a different format for some reason: https://developers.google.com/gmail/imap_extensions#access_to_gmail_labels_x-gm-labels

@nathan you're only creating more work for the poor technician who has to move them back to GSuite after they realise what they had was better all along. Why don't you save yourself some time and not create work for yourself!

I'll chime in, we support six G-Suite tenants and ten Office 365 tenants, have to say my preference is Office 365.

I got asked today by the head to investigate o365, we've been GAFE for 3.5 years now - I need a valid argument to give him as to why it's not a good idea. I think it was to do with one of the members of SLT that went to some training / demo and was amazed by what o365 could do (GAFE can do the same as far as I could gather - just typically they aren't using GAFE correctly) all to do with workflow.

+1 for cloudmigrator365 I think we paid £4 per mailbox but it was brilliant. Unlimited data transfer also. Fantastic bit of kit. We moved 4 primary schools from Google to Office365 this tool allowed us to change the users mail domain also during the migration to 365.

No offence, but your opinion isn't an input we use for deciding on what we do as a trust and what works best for us and our staff. I would also appreciate it if you stuck to the OP. This isn't a thread about G Suite vs O365, it's about email migration.
