Music for videos

Having a bit of a nightmare time trying to work out how to legally use music in a video for a school. We want to make a video effectively promoting the school, have interviews in another video with the same sort of music.

 

Now looking on YouTube under the "music policies" I see there are lots of tracks in the current charts and past that can be used. It does state these policies only relate to YouTube videos which is where we will post the videos.

 

So is this ok to do? The school wants a current song, and as long as it is in the music policies allowing use I assume it's fine. But I cannot find information anywhere about this apart from royalty free music which is not what the school wants.

 

Has anybody else done something similar and can you advise please?

 

As a side note I have emailed customer services at PPL who do music licensing for background music (which we have), but again couldn't find information relating to what we want to do specifically on their website.

This topic gets covered repeatedly with monotonous regularity, to the point that folks can't be bothered replying, hence you've had little response thus far. If you use YouTube's Music Policies and their licensed music, you have no control over the subject of the Ads which may appear on that video, which has an inherent risk of your video being accompanied by something inappropriate, and can then result in something inappropriate being displayed on your main school website or anywhere else where you embed that footage.

 

What the school wants and what the school can legally do are usually two very different things.

 

The most relevant part of that post is this:

 

{None of the available licenses out there allow} you to modify any of the works in any way, nor to format-shift them (eg: rip DVD to a video to store on the network, rip an audio CD to MP3), nor to use any piece of music for backing on a powerpoint or video (known as syncronising). To use a piece of copyrighted music on a video or powerpoint, you need to contact the publisher of the work and negotiate 'Mechanical & Synchronisation Rights'. They'll bill you for their time, as well as the licensing fees. The permissions for EACH tune will need to be negotiated individually with each publisher.
