Website cookie warnings could be consigned to internet history under plans to let computer users remove the much-maligned notices.

 

Sites that use cookies – small pieces of code that are ubiquitous across the web – have been required to carry banners or pop-up notifications since 2012 under EU laws that require websites to tell visitors if their personal data is being processed.

 

But a leaked privacy directive from the European Commission has revealed proposals to relax the law by allowing internet users to change privacy settings on their web browser. Ticking a box allowing the use of cookies would represent blanket permission, removing the need for every website to tell visitors...

One thing I've always wondered: Does the page you land on issue a cookie?

The banners invariably say something like "By using this website you consent to..." or similarly worded disclaimers, but what if I don't consent to it? What if I see this notice and decide "Nah, I'm not down with that." and leave?

My suspicion is the site will have placed a cookie anyway.
