Visually Impaired Students viewing IWB....

We've had a request that Join.Me is installed on an iPad in order to share one particular teacher's PC screen, as the student is struggling to see what's happening on the IWB in the classroom.

 

Wondered whether anyone has had a similar request and if you've gone with Join.Me or not?

 

I'm not entirely happy that the student will have unmonitored access to the teacher's laptop and whether a school policy change will potentially be needed. Although it looks like access can be 'view only', there's the chance that said teacher will have reports open etc at any time, which the student would be able to view?

I had a massive argument with our local VI team about this. PC mirroring is fine until the teacher freezes the projector and then does something else while the class are working potentially mirroring confidential information to the student.

 

I won the argument and our VI students have the lesson notes emailed to them in PDF format BEFORE the lesson and they use their iPad to open and magnify the notes. Been doing it this way for 2 years now and works really well.

You don't mention which classroom management solution you have (if any) If you have Impero you could deploy the client to the iPad and broadcast the IWB station to that device. Not sure about other solution though.

Yes, thanks Dave- that had run through my mind and would certainly be an option if we had Impero but sadly we don't.

 

I might suggest that the LA stump up to buy this child a laptop and we can arrange for lesson resources to be uploaded to a location accessible by the child. I'm really not keen on screen sharing at the best of times, and certainly not for a student to view a teacher's laptop for extended periods of time.

If it is just the one IWB they are having trouble with have you looked into what is different about it? I.E. old bulb in the projector, inadequate blinds for windows, poor seating location?

It's only one (visually impaired) student who's having issues with it. I think said student struggles to read anything beyond ~30cm from their face, so is a problem they're going to have throughout their time at the school and on every IWB that they encounter sadly

There is also the service run by the RNIB who can provide digitised copies of all the school text books. My VI students have all their books on their iPads rather than paper copies.

Fair question. Tbh I haven't been party to the majority of conversations about this student. My understanding is the poor child has multiple vision issues and they inherently can't see without magnification of some sort.

 

I think my best bet is to recommend the resources the child needs are made accessible on a device. Alternatively, the decision whether to allow screen mirroring of the teacher's PC will need to be one made by SLT and relevant policy changes made.

We use Netsupport School and used this to mirror the whiteboard content onto a laptop the student had in front of her.

Talk to your SENCO - what does the student's EHCP say? If the student is under a plan, then it will need amending to account for the changes in support, and this can be the basis for a funding bid to cover the cost of any specific software or systems required for that student.

Mirroring I think is going to open up a can of data/child protection worms that isn't worth looking into. A device for them to use certainly, the teachers should then make the necessary adjustments to ensure they have the materials to hand.

This is where things like class onenote etc come into their own on Office 365, if you're already going down that route it might be worth investing a little more time.
