Office 365 - usernames?

We may end up getting ourselves on Office 365 soon (well, we already are, but only for staff and as part of the LEA email system, but this would be a proper in-house tenant). I have a query regarding usernames on the system.

 

At the moment, internal usernames are just pupil full names, but this is obviously not suitable for email addresses for various reasons. Is it possible to have Office 365 assign a different format of email alias to the pupils instead? ie. If their name is JohnSmith, it'd generate the email address [email protected]?

Seems this is an absent feature in 365. It was in on premis.

Sorry I am missing something? If you use ADSync then the email address will be pulled from the Mail field so just put in there what you want there email to be

Basically syncs AD to Office 365. So any fields you set it AD will flow to Office 365. Including the email address you specify.

Basically ADSync does what it says on the tin - replicates items of your choosing from your local AD up to Office 365 Azure AD. So, as @snagrat suggests, the easiest thing for you to do is implement a solution locally (using Salamander or similar) to populate the email address field on student AD objects with the email address naming convention of your choosing. Email address does not need to match the account's username.

 

Also, you can have a different email suffix for students if you like too - just add another domain to Office 365 and set the suffix on all student accounts in AD. Lots of possibilities and I'm sure there are plenty of people on here to bounce ideas off before deciding how you'd like to set yours up.

Your login name to office 365 doesn't need to be the same as the email address. It will just be a bit strange for them that the address they login with 1 email address and the real world address is different. To get around that if you use ADFS you can can change things so it logs in with the SAMaccountname instead.
