unixman_again Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 In case you're brave "Besides being full of proprietary pentalobe screws, the new MacBook Pro has a battery that's glued to the case, and its processor, RAM and SSD are soldered to the logic board. Add to that the Touch Bar, which further complicates repairs, and you basically have no reason to ever open this MacBook Pro. The only thing you can hope to replace on your own is the trackpad..." The Touch Bar MacBook Pro teardown: Nearly impossible to repair
Norphy Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 No real surprise there. They've been heading in that direction for years. The new Apple notebooks are basically iPads that run macOS and that's a real shame.
synaesthesia Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 Throwaway culture in a premium product bracket. Never good. "Ah yes, you can drive this car, it looks like a Bentley, has a Rover K series engine and no part of it is replaceable. Think yourself lucky you can refuel it"
davethetekkie Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 ...I miss my Rover 414. That little K series engine turned out to be plucky and reliable after all the horror stories... but then I never ragged it! ...but I digress... it's not really a surprise. My dad used to be a Panasonic service engineer so I got to see it start... even when gear was built to be serviceable they gradually changed policy until next to nowt was considered worth repairing. Stands to reason that eventually they'd just stop considering how to make things repairable as part of the design process...
synaesthesia Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 The K series changed the way engines were made. Light and fast, but built by monkeys. There's a reason I used it as a comparison
tom1 Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 These MBPs are just bleh. Apple have lost touch with the intended market for the product, but gained a touch...bar..
dblight Posted November 16, 2016 Posted November 16, 2016 I like the look but can justify the massive cost! My MacBook Pro 13" retina has everything I need!
