How often do you run replication jobs of your VM's (Veeam)?

Hi all,

 

Just setting up VM replication in Veeam to a second host - three mission critical production servers - a DC, MIS server and print/management server.

 

This is for the event of the primary host going bang --> fire up the replica VM --> all good .

 

 

I'm wondering how to schedule the replication process.

 

I already run two separate Veeam backup jobs per night of all my production VM's, and an extra (third) one of the MIS server --> I could restore these backups in an emergency but it would take time hence the replication.

 

 

 

I'm thinking once once per week.

 

 

How would you do it ?

All VMs daily.

SIMs/Primary File servers 3 times a day (Just before it starts, lunch, and after finishes).

Anything that's regularly editted by people and can cause a lot of fuss if it breaks (e.g. Websites/VLE) hourly.

That replication, not backups right?

 

After initial replication job, how long do they take for the subsequent replications?

Yep all replications, backups different to those.

 

The replications vary obviously depending how much has changed since the last one but to give a few examples from today:

 

(Note these timings are based on a bandwidth limit we put in place so it doesn't hurt the network during the day)

SIMS 13mins

"Main" File 19mins

Web 11mins

The jobs will the other mass of servers about an hour but those are the once a day ones.

 

Remember the replications don't stop anyone using it though as it's snapshot based

Yep. Just running the post initial replication now. Looks like it will take about 40 mins.

Incidentally, what kind of bandwidth limit do u put on those ? We're gigabit down to the desktop.
