Google announces Jamboard, a competitor to Microsoft's Surface Hub

The Jamboard is a 55-inch 60Hz 4K UHD touchscreen that runs Android Marshmallow and will cost less than $6,000 (~£4,925) when it is eventually released next year. It supports passive stylus and finger recognition, with 16-touch points.

To capture your ideas clearly, Jamboard is packed with tools like sticky notes and stencils as well as intelligent features like handwriting and shape recognition.

 

It’s a hassle when you use a whiteboard, reach the end of your meeting and have to quickly scramble to snap a picture of your work. How many times have you scribbled “do not erase” above your idea? Jamboard lets you take your work with you. When you “jam” with your colleagues, it lives in the cloud in Google Drive, so you can easily share what you’ve created or come back to iterate at anytime. Yeah I could put 2 x 55" in for that. They wouldn't be 4K to be fair but running off a 1366x768 laptop it doesn't make much difference !

Can we get the software without having to buy the hardware? We have 55" (and larger) 10-point multi-touch HD displays already, and they cost rather less than £5,000-ish. Is 4k resolution required for a decent stylus-based drawing experience?

It still looked like it had lag between pen and ink. I guess their USP is that they tie in the video conferencing and whiteboard sharing all in one but I don't see that being a use for a school. If it is a school will all ready have it to fit the tools they have (SMART AMP, Prowise, etc)

 

Nice bit of kit, overly expensive and really doing things education has been for a while.

I think that was just poor sync on their video editing (usually people aren't actually using these products, it's fake), there's no way they'd release it with that much lag.

Works well on Chromebooks running Android Apps - already used in the classroom. No need for the actual hardware - very cool app.

I need it in my life....just the software that is.... we want to move away from projectors with "dumb" large format touch screens. Hopefully with the jamboard software as we're a Google school!

It can be used on Chromebooks/Chromeboxes. What we need is microsoft to write an android compatibility layer!

We are now in a weird situation where Android/Chromeboxes are running software that windows cannot.

Fruit Ninja worked really well on a 65" clevertouch back in 2013 when i tested it. I've not tried anything lately or the Jamboard software via the same route.
