Removing upstream proxy

Hi all

 

I'm have trouble getting Connect for Chromebooks to work, which is a problem as that's one of the reasons we bought Smoothwall. Long story short, the SWGfL engineers have asked me to remove the upstream proxy while they test things their end. I've gone into web proxy >> upstream proxy >> proxies and deleted the proxy information in there (took a photo of it before!). Is that it? It hasn't sorted the problem, so I wonder if I've not got that right.

Err how's it currently setup?

 

If you removed the upstream proxy in Smoothwall, and still have the books pointing to Smoothwall they'll have no internet access as it's not pointing it anywhere.

 

If you have them pointing to SWGFL proxy direct Smoothwall won't be involved at all.

Thanks Steve. SWG said this - For testing purpose , we have allowed all web traffic from Smoothwall to internet through our firewall. Kindly remove the upstream proxy and retest. Please contact the Smoothwall support for testing this, if possible so I just wanted to check I've actually done that for them and then tried to connect to Google (which it doesn't). Does that sound right what I've done in terms of removing the proxy? If so, and it's a negative, I'll put it back again.

Well unless they've changed something, if they removed the requirement for a proxy on their end and opened the firewall up, that means you'd be on "fully" unfiltered internet on the entire school? (Which they always said isn't doable normally when I've asked to test it)

 

If you try to browse to something that's RM blocked is it still blocking it website wise?

Thanks Steve, I don't know, it's still blocked by smoothwall. But in terms of 'removing the upstream proxy', that's all you'd need to do?

For what its worth, we've got customers on the SWGFL who have completely opted out of the grid's filtering (I believe that the SWGFL filtering is now a separate item which the schools can choose to opt out of and save themselves a bit of cash if they have their own filter).

Yes it is, but if it's turned on they generally won't even open a range of ports without headteacher authorisation Let alone turning the whole thing off, thus my comment
