Power Issues With Optiplex Pc's

Hi please save me from going insane !!

 

We are having a few problems with our series of Optiplex Machines ,Dell Optiplex 7010 USFF, 9020 USFF, 9020 Micro

 

Randomly a PC in the room won't power on. Its completely dead. No network light nothing. Unplugging the power and leaving it for 5 minutes then plugging it back in it fires up and its back to normal.

 

When the pc dead if i reset the power plug from the power supply to the motherboard it will fire up and work again. So it seems the soft power up on the motherboard seems to crash. The power supply tests fine.

 

We have upgraded to the latest bios and firmware. Dell have changed motherboards with new motherboards and still having the issues.

 

Any ideas ... have you guys had this issue ? have you got this issue please let us know !!

Do any of the numbers light up on the front?

 

Had various power/other problems solved over the years with the numbers.

I dealt with one 9020 USFF a couple of days ago that did this. I removed it from the room and took it to our office where it powered up OK. I left it on for a couple of hours waiting for a crash (it had been reported as crashing, not not powering on) I took it back to the room after it had not crashed and haven't heard anything more since. I thought it was odd, but I dismissed it as it was working and there were other things to do.

 

I will keep an eye on it and get back if the power-on problem returns.

That's what I've been doing but its driving me crazy walking around the site re setting pc's ! :-O yes please keep an eye out let me know ..

Get dell to swap out a PSU to see if this makes a difference. I've had intermittent PSU problems on a different brand. I got a replacement PSU sent, which had a different revision number on it (hmmm) and this worked fine. Over time other PSU's played up and I just got them swapped out.

I'VE ONLY WORKED IT OUT !!!

 

It seems the lovely students are sticking paper clips into the USB Ports and shorting out the motherboard. The motherboard then is going into protection mode until its power is reset !! Time to catch them in the act !!

Glad you have worked this one out, but as this is a trick that our students (and possibly others too) have not worked out yet, should this reply be hidden from non-members?
