elsiegee40 Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I read this in the Times, but due its paywall I'm linking to the equivalent in the Daily Mail. Google and Skype become racist slang terms online for trolls avoiding filters | Daily Mail Online This is going to be a challenge for both schools and the filtering companies Everyday words are being used as slang for racist terms:
TechMonkey Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Story I was told was how back in the midst of the "Your Mum" insults a school banned saying that. Of course the kids then used just "Your", then when that was banned just "Mum", then "M". More insults got reduce to just one letter and of course staff were getting in a mess trying to police it. I've never heard how it was solved but it just goes to show how creative people can be to get around "filters" and when they want to insult someone.
pete Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I think I'll need a bit more evidence before I treat this as anything more than 4chan or their ilk trolling Google's Jigsaw program to self-destruct itself. Where did the story start? Far-right Twitter and Facebook users make secret code to avoid censorship | The Independent “Google” doesn’t appear to have come to life as a codeword so much as the opposite: a move by 4chan users to intentionally associate the word with racism. That emerged during what people called “Operation Google” – by using the name of the company as if it were a slang word for black people, users hoped to encourage the search engine to ban its own name. That was launched in response to Google’s Jigsaw, which uses AI technology to stop harassment and abuse online. Given that the system was powered by artificial intelligence, users pointed out, it would be possible to trick it into making false associations so long as words were used in the right context.
