Garacesh Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I've had two users so far bring me their laptops that they've upgraded to Windows 10 a while back, both reporting that recently their Wi-Fi in school is fine, but when they take it home it doesn't work. Connection intermittently drops or the laptop simply can't see their networks. Our kit in school is standard A/B, using both 2.4 and 5GHz, nought special. I'm thinking maybe the routers at home are newer and doing some fancy stuff that Microsoft's updates might have mucked up? Shot in the dark, though. Just wondering if anyone else has seen these issues.
Dos_Box Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Are they still on the upgrade or on have they had a fresh Win 10 install since? There have been reported issues with Win 10 and WiFi due to certain components not being updated correctly during the upgrade process.
Garacesh Posted October 5, 2016 Author Posted October 5, 2016 Aye, I'm fairly certain they're on upgrades.
Dos_Box Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Here are a few things I have found which may be of help: Windows 10: How to fix BROKEN wifi after your free upgrade | Tech | Life & Style | Daily Express (The Express came up top on Google!) Resolving Connection Issues on Your Wi-Fi Network for Windows 10 | Dell Ireland - The bottom of this one offers some good tips https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b7aa4c64-5103-45be-83cf-7c5e773f6209/wifi-keeps-disconnecting-after-upgrading-to-windows-10?forum=win10itprogeneral - Many suggestions here too One to possibly look at is how Win 10 tags networks (public and private) as some are reporting that home networks have been re-tagged as public and Windows is dropping connections to these. When I get home I shall be looking at this as well. 1
PyROm Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 We have had this the last couple of days, but with Windows 7 computers. It looks like BT put out a firmware update to their routers which kept the same ssid etc but changed something about the connection, deleting their home wifi connection (in manage wireless connections) and getting them to reconnect when they went home fixed it for them. 1

Hmm.. Interesting. I know one of them said he was using a BT HomeHub. Don't know about the other. I'll have to ask, thanks!
PyROm Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I should add that one of the users pointed out that their iphones and tablets still connected fine to their router, just the work laptop wouldnt, however deleting and letting them reconnect on their laptop still fixed it for them.
KK20 Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 We have had the opposite behaviour, all laptops that have been imaged by us in school have worked fine but some of our teachers with their own devices who have a variety of surface pros and laptops (plus a mac with bootcamp) have had issues with wireless not connecting randomly when they bring the laptop in from home (first boot of the day so to speak). The mac works fine in macOS mode in school or at home. Wireless is ubiquiti unifi and has no issues with teachers on windows 8.1 (for those who have two devices). I try to tell people to tag the work connection as work, this has helped sometimes but not always. I did take one of the SMT surface pro and add it to our domain (it was pro windows 10 not enterprise though) and I also added the VPN too. He has had no issues since which may point to tagging issues as im not sure if joining a domain tags network connections in a different way?
sted Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I've had some toshiba where the wireless card was being powered down to save battery life so i had to disable that feature in device manager
jmak Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I've had it on 3 Dell laptops at home (family owned, not school). I use Unify APs with a Draytek router at home - might try turning roaming aggressiveness down as per the link in @dosbox's post, although they've always roamed between the 3 APs before. The symptom I get is that when you boot the PC it connects and then when you visit a website the first page opens successfully, but then the next page fails with check your internet connection error message. Reset the WiFi card and you can visit one more page. Android and iOS devices working fine. This started before the august update installed, but has carried on since. Windows 10 Pro on all laptops affected.
