MacBook SSD update

Hello,

 

I've recently installed a solid state HDD in my MacBook, obviously this doesn't come with macOS X pre installed. Please can someone send me a link to download OS X El Capitan, or sierra?

Download the installer from the Mac App Store and then create a bootable USB flash drive (8GB+) using Install Disk Creator.

The only way to download the installer is from a Mac.

 

Edit. If you still have your old HDD you could temporarily boot from that to download the installer.

Im a little out of touch, but I thought you could press a button during boot and install OSX over the internet?

You can, CMD R at startup. You need to authenticate with an Apple ID that has access to Sierra / El Capitan.

That will also work, but Internet Recovery will only download the version of OS X that the Mac came with.

 

Depending upon how old the Mac is it may involve downloading significantly more data just to upgrade to Sierra since it requires 10.7.5 or later.

If you just want your OS to copy over, bang the HDD back in, connect the SSD via USB and use CCC to image it across.

Wouldn't it be quicker to leave the SSD in the Mac and then connect the HDD to the USB adapter/dock (assuming @dloudon96 has one that is)?

Depends. If the Mac will boot from a USB HDD (which it should) to get into OS X it may be pretty slow on the read side. Could take longer to do. My experience is that it takes a good hour and a half over USB 2.0, should be much better if you have a USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt caddy.

That's strange. About a month or so ago I reinstalled OS X on a Late 2013 iMac and Internet Recovery downloaded 10.9 (which is the OS they came with out-of-the-box). I wonder if it's because this Mac had a Fusion Drive?
