HDMI over Ethernet, HP ProSAFE Layer 2 Switch, 2 VLANS - Small Business Advice...

Hi, hope someone is able to help me out with this setup.

 

I have been given the task of using HDMI over Ethernet to display a video on a television screen in the main reception of our small business.

 

I went with the ESYNiC 120m HDbitT HDMI Extender Ethernet Network Extender option as it supported being distributed over switches. I purchased the NETGEAR GS108E-300UKS and went with the recommendation of assigning the ports to a VLAN (VLAN 3), with ports 5 on the respective switches tagged (1x in reception, 1x in Server room). I additionally setup a VLAN 2 whereby ports 2 and 3 tagged. The rest of the ports are disabled.

 

However, when I'm connecting it, both switches are plugged in and VLAN 2 appears to communicate fine. However, VLAN 3 can't communicate with the sender device in the Server room. There is one port patched in the room, which is connected to an unmanaged switch which is fed off VLAN 2.

 

By my basic understanding of Layer 2 switches, the nodes cannot communicate through VLANS, this is an advantage of layer three? We cannot afford layer three switches, or anything above what we have already bought. I understand my setup won't work as the only uplink for the switch is on VLAN 2 and thus won't communicate. These switches are "SMART" meaning they are configurable via a Web browser.

 

I have been using the 802.1Q VLAN setup option. Is there an option on these switches to configure a, say "master" uplink for all VLANS? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

 

Does anyone have these switches, or can provide me with a resolution? We are really short of cash, and need the switch in reception to serve computers, it cannot be directly patched. As soon as we connect the HDMI extender to VLAN 2 we get an image however the data floods the network and thus knocks off the Wireless.

 

In simple terms, I want to use the switches we've got and use port 5 for HDMI (VLAN 3), ports 2,3 and 4 I want to use for two computers in our reception, on VLAN 2.

 

Cheers for the info you provide. We are a small business and I don't work there full time. I hope we have all the equipment we need? Appreciate any guidance.

Can you not tag the uplinks between the switches with multiple VLANs? VLAN2 wont be able to communicate with VLAN3 still (requires L3) but at least the VLANs will work across switches.

For your uplink, just add all the vlans as tagged on the port. Obviously you need to have the same VLANs tagged on the ports at both ends. I suspect the sender and receiver device will need to be connected to a un-tagged port on the vlan at both ends, as it's unlikely they will understand vlan tags.

 

Not sure why you need two vlans for this?

Thanks both of you for the replies. I shall attempt to do this and see what the result is. We need two VLANs as it was recommended that you put the HDMI over Ethernet adapter son their own. If you don't, it will flood the main network and thus knocks our wireless offline. We had VLAN 3 as our HDMI over Ethernet network and VLAN 2 as our main Domain Network as where the switch is located, we need to provide connection to our main LAN from that location.

Sorry didn't read your post properly.

 

Should be easy then, just add both VLANs tagged on the up links. Then use untagged ports for your sender/receiver and PCs on the other vlan. Any frames coming in on an untagged port will be associated with the assigned VLAN.

Layer 3 shouldn't come into it, as I assume there is no reason for the traffic to pass between the vlans?

There is no reason for any traffic to pass between the VLANs. In our case, as I assumed - Layer 2 would suffice. I am confused however I am meant to allocate an uplink to this switch. This is one of the cheapest switches on Amazon which gives layer two capability. We previously had the TP-Link offering which did allow us to set as master uplink, however I cannot find this in this model? We are using 802.1Q option for VLANning if that makes any difference? I am trying to be as useful as I can with this, however this is really my first time with this soft of thing. Which switch do I patch the port in the reception to? I think it has to be the Netgear, however I don't know how I can tag multiple VLANs to a certain port?

 

Sorry for all of the questions, however all those who have helped will receive kudos on every post. I want to get this to work, and appreciate everything that's been done so far to help!

An update.... I created a trunk for the VLANS and all is working fine. Kudos given to all who helped. It's been a long while since I attempted doing anything like this, let alone doing it in practice! Cheers.
