Mac on a windows domain.

Ok I havent used a mac for several year now and Im back to being a n00b. I was wondering how i can setup an eMac on a windows domain ie user authentication and relavant security and policies set based on that. Is it possible?

Here are your options.

 

You can authenticate a Mac against a Windows domain by binding it to the domain. Some information can be found here http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/windows/ but to secure and configure it you need to start using login hooks really.

 

The next level is to use a 3rd party application. For years this has been MacAdministrator from Hi-Resolution. A very powerful tool that will deal with the authentication for you and allows client and user security, distribution of software and much more.

 

The final way (and the most common really) is to use Mac OSX Server. The authentication is still done from the windows domain and machine security/configuration/build is all done from the machine running OSX Server.

 

Our OSX Server is actually a Mac Mini with lots of RAM and drive space.

 

But you could go the whole hog and get a cheap Xserve.

 

Most Mac educational suppliers will help you with working out what is best for you and there are lots of apple mailing lists out there too.
