HP SmartArray - sequentially swap drives and rebuild then increase array size?

Title says it all really. Thanks to some budgeting I've managed to get larger 10k SAS drives for a remote site that doesn't require them, but we really need to increase an array size at our main site.

 

If I swap each 600GB 10k SAS out for a 1.2TB 10k SAS wait for the array to rebuild after each swap, at the end will I be able to increase the logical drive size?

I believe not. If you remove a drive and insert a new one, then the rebuild will be of the same geometry of the rest of the drives in the array. It will build it as a 600GB drive.

 

I think your going to have to backup everything and rebuild / restore on to the new array with the newer disks to achieve the extra space.

It sounds like a nice cheat doesn't it? I've never seen it done though.

 

Tbh, by the time you've waited for each drive to replicate, you might as well have swapped out the disks and run a restore, it would be quicker.
