Server recycling period

Hi

 

We had to Virtualised our server and had taken an operating lease for new servers

for 3 years. We have now come to an end of the lease and the finance company has given option to for extension\by paying monthly

Or buy the equipment by paying one off payment and take the ownership of the KIT.

 

What is the standard period for recycling the servers?

Is it 3 years \after 5 years.

 

Please suggest, not sure what option to choose.

We generally buy servers outright from Dell with a 4 or 5 year NBD on-site warranty. At that point I try to replace them as soon as my budget allows. Once replaced I'll keep the older kit around for a couple more years as a place to shove testing VMs so they don't take capacity on the newer stuff.

 

Going to Hyper-V (just our choice of hypervisor...) has made this process a whole lot easier.

 

Bare in mind we don't replace all servers at once, we have them spread out a year or two after another.

Up until recently, we stuck to a 3-4 year cycle. However, due to virtualisation and the like, we are going for 5 years.

 

That said, if you are leasing something, and the lease ends, I'd say move on to the next lease rather than coaxing along older equipment.
