Computer booting itself?

Odd problem here.

 

When I shut down this Windows 7 PC, it goes off for about 2 or 3 seconds before coming back on again.

 

Shut down time is INCREDIBLY fast. Any ideas?

Incredibly fast such as a hibernate? Could the default shutdown option have been changed to hibernate? When turning back on usually it would say Resuming Windows after getting past the BIOS screens though.

No it's definitely 'shutting down' and booting from scratch. It's so strange.

 

Edit: just looked again. It's 'shutting down' within about 3 seconds of clicking shut down. It is a pretty old computer however it does have an SSD in it. It still seems pretty fast though?

It does sound pretty fast I would agree. I assume all Wake On services (apart from WOL) are disabled in the BIOS?

Only thing I can think is if the the PCs is shutting down so fast that there is some communication that is coming back a bit delayed which is causing a wakeup event.

It just gets stranger!

 

I've put in a newly installed harddrive, I've changed the power supply and I've set the bios to defaults.

 

It's still doing it! I just can't imagine what it could be?! It's an older machine and I'm tempted to just scrap it - but my stubborn nature wants to figure this out first haha!

Well that just really leaves the motherboard, a damaged switch or poltechgeists.

Out of interest any damaged capacitors on the motherboard?

They all look okay, but I'll get the motherboard removed and check the solders not cracked.

I have an Optiplex 620 with an SSD in my garage that does the same thing. Baffles the crap out of me. There is no auto power on configured in the BIOS, and no WOL setup as it isn't plugged in to network. I just turn the plug strip off now. My ambition to figure nagging problems out is apparently not as much as yours.
