Another RDS - RemoteFX vs HDX vs PCoIp

Afternoon all,

 

My quest continues to find a decent VDI solution.

 

Does anyone use plain RDS RDVH with RemoteFX enabled Grid cards? If so how does it perform over standard RDS or towards Citrix and VMWare?

 

Do you get decent video and a comparative desktop to a normal desktop?

 

I am thinking an SSD and dual GRID based RDS 2016 server will provide an excellent platform, but its not easy to get suppliers to lend you a server full of expensive gubbins to test on!!

We have a VMware Horizon View system for 450 student PCoIP zero client endpoints. We are currently piloting an RDS solution for staff (Windows 10 VDI desktops hosted on Server 2012 R2 with GRID K1). In our testing I would say video is absolutely fine. Can drop the odd frame in full screen mode (I'm thinking YouTube here) but it is more than acceptable and in some ways better than the PCoIP video playback in our environment as we notice less compression.

Thanks Winner, did you try without the GRID cards? I am interested in the boost from RemoteFX over standard RDS.

 

It's hard to test things like this, when a GRID card is 4 figures, and I don't have a spare chunky SSD based uberserver!

Yes, video can also work well without the grid, we tested this by disabling GPU acceleration in IE and Chrome. You need some of the grunt at the endpoint then to handle the video. We use Pentium NUCs as thin clients which work well in this scenario.

VMware have produced their own new connection protocol called "Blast", which begs the question how long will they support PCoIP for....

I wouldn't worry too much about that to be honest, they still support RDP after all this time

 

There's a lot of deployed pcoip end points VMware wouldn't be viewed favourably just cutting that off.

 

Blast extreme is definitely the future especially with Nvidia Grid 2. Going to be interesting.

 

We're doing more with Grid and RemoteFX (it's nowhere near as good as with pcoip yet but 2016 TP5 helps too) in testing, fun times ahead.
