New Server Room hardware

Hi Guys,

 

Just looking for some advice on hardware for our new server room We're getting an extension built as part of our three to two tier conversion and I'm going to be given a (small) room for all our equipment, but not sure on planning it out.

 

It's not going to be particularly big so space is a premium and I was just wondering what sort of racks you guys are using?

 

We're looking at a standard 42U rack, but one side is going to end up being against a wall. It's going to house our UPSs, servers, and various core network infrastructure in there (about 24U currently) so it's got to be big enough for that, and preferably have some decent cable and power management.

 

Any ideas for racks, or any gotchas? I'm not particularly sure on what sort of width and depth to look at for this, or what to do in terms of PDUs.

 

At the moment I'm thinking we'll have x2 8 core fibre runs between our two existing comms cabs and this new building, some form of air conditioning, and a couple of 50a dedicated circuits into the room.

 

Any tips mucho appreciated!

We use 42U racks, each cab is next to another, As long as you can get enough room in front to slide a server in and behind to cable that should be fine, it's how my last main comms was with jus one cab. We have networking from below floor and Power from cieling and this works well for us with 10 cabinets

 

If you are going to be runnning a load of equipment then suffiecient cooling is a consideration even putting 2 slightly smaller units than one big one depending on room spec.

 

Raised flooring if you have a load of cabs but may not be an issue with just one because you are right against a wall but defo a consideration if you are on ground floor.

 

PDU wise, one fed from UPS and one striaght from clean supply both to PDU strips.

 

Enviromental monitoring if the room is not often visited, jus to make sure aware of heat or humidity problems.

Make sure you get the depth right else some rack mount kits for servers etc. may not fit as they may be too short! My boss got caught out with that one and we had to buy some rack mountable shelves so an extra expense we could do without.
