Windows Server 2012 R2 WDS Multicast Issues

Hope you are having a productive summer?

 

Hoping that someone can help?

 

Our WDS server has always been set up to unicast. I have followed the Microsoft guide to set up multicast and I am not having a lot of joy.

 

All of the machines seem to say waiting for server then around 1 minute later seem to revert to unicast.

 

As you can see from the screenshots, the NIC is maxed out as the sessions are running in unicast. I am sure that something simple is missing!

 

Any suggestions?

I think it might be relating to the setup, but I cannot put my finger on it.

 

In the logs I have found two entries.

 

There are no available MADCAP servers on interface X.X.X.X

 

An error occurred while trying to create the UDP endpoint for WDSMC provider on interface X.X.X.X:63313. This can happen if the network interface was disabled or changed, or some other application is already using the port. The provider will not be able to receive requests on this interface. Error Information: 0x2

I have but I do not see any devices listed here, it is as if there are no leases being issued.

Sorry scrap that, the machines get a lease from that range and then within a minute start to image via unicast.

I usually set a range on the WDS server and define the UDP range (just click the radio button). Have you got igmp on your core and your edge switches configured for multicast ?

I'll try the range on the WDS server instead.

 

We have a HP Procurve 5412zl with HP Procurve edge switches too. All have IGMP enabled on all VLANs, is that all I need or have I missed something?

Is the WDS physical is virtual which hypervisor?

It's virtual on VMware vSphere 6.

 

The whole virtual environment and all servers are in one subnet together

I had a lot of multicast issues with speed. I found if flow control was enabled for the nic VM it helped. You cant do this on hyper-v so there is a reg key for max bandwidth. It depends what speed you clients are.

I've changed it over the use the multicast pool from the WDS server and it waited 30 seconds before starting a unicast session and disappearing from the multicast window.

 

I read something about HP switches not liking the default range so changed it to the recommendation but still no joy :-(
