Really basic SYSPREP question

OK - I have used SYPREP in several schools and I have had no problems - However I have been here nearly 18 months now and I STILL can't get sysprep to work

 

I would be grateful if someone could tell me if I am missing something

 

What I do is

 

a) Install Windows 7 Ent from the CD

b) install the necessary drivers (mouse wifi or whatever is needed)

b2) maybe install software like Office but for testing maybe not to save time

c) run Sysprep (either command line or via the interface) - OOB and generalise

 

then maybe send the image to an external disk - or internal disk or over WDS etc - doesn't seem to make any difference

 

d) restart machine

 

this is where it goes wrong - the PC goes as far as starting services - the says it needs to restart

restarting just gets as far as starting services

 

I have tried this on dell laptops, compaq laptops and Zoostorm desktops and Stone laptops - (different drivers needs for each - of course) and I get the same result every time

 

Only way to get it up again is reinstall from CD ( or restore Clonezilla image)

 

AM I missing something, being thick or is this room cursed

depends whats in your syeprep files some things were depreciated in sp1 iirc and can cause failures if they are applied internet explorer settings for one iirc

Thanks - actually I haven't tried it for a while (waiting for hols) so not sure if it had SP1 on it or not - is it worth trying it again with all current updates??

id do it on a vm and just a simple sysprep file see if that works something like (i know it says pro but works on ent)

This website can create the answer file for you however it may be worth learning about it yourself as it a useful tool when you get to grips with it. Windows Answer File Generator

Might have it sorted out by now. But it could be drivers. Have a look and make sure that you have kmdf update installed. This helps drivers that require a reboot and supports newer drivers such as ones Dell use.

OK - never heard of it - which may be part of the problem

 

Will try it as soon as I get the all the carp the electricians have left behind sorted out

I ran across a similar issue a while ago in a university which heavily uses Dell. It comes up with an error saying it needs to be rebooted, you reboot it then it continues doing the loop. There is a registry hack if you manage to get to it. But I found KMDF 1.11 worked.

 

I forgot UMDF 1.11 as well.

Why are people putting drivers in images ?

MDT will inject on deployment.

This might be the issue.

The image isn't the problem - it's the fact that , in my case, the PC won't restart after the SYSPREP

 

although the final aim is to have a usable image

I presume he doesn't have the drivers on the image (just the bare basic drivers), plus Sysprep does strip away drivers. If it was a driver mismatch issue, I guess it would blue screen rather than rebooting.

 

The UDMF and KMDF hotfixes are something that I would recommend putting on your base image as this does resolve future driver issues.

When the screen telling you to restart appears, if you press shift + F10 then in cmd type:

 

cd oobe

msoobe

Sorry - I have been hijacked by a new born grandson and failed equipment after teh electricians have left so the SYSPREP problem has had to take a back seat

 

Hopefully I will get back onto it as soon as I get the teacher sorted out!!
