Apple server moving from Apple's Workgroup Manager, to Profile manager

Hi All,

 

I'm wondering if anyone can help me. How easy/quick is it to move over to profile manager from using Workgroup manager. I was speaking to Apple today regarding some issues with the Apple Mac side in a classroom today and he kept mentioning that we need to move over to profile manager. Is this easy done?

 

At the moment our Apple server is joined to our active directory domain, along with all the iMacs etc. The students login to the mac side using their windows credentials. I've had a brief look at profile manager but not sure how it would work with our setup. When I'm looking at the profiles, Apple are saying that I'd need to create a profile with the settings that I want and the push out the profile via profile manager to the machines.

 

Obviously I don't want to mess anything up on the Windows side of things, our Apple server is seeing our LDAP sever and has all our current users showing, I'm not sure how I would go about creating a profile and applying it to the machines, would I need to create a profile and add it to a group, then in active directory set the users who need that profile under the 'add to group' option??

 

Any help/guidance would be massively appreciated.

We did it around twelve months ago, when we move to Yosemite. We stuck with WGM up to that point. We had some issues with installing the profiles on the clients in order to manage them, but we worked through them. In the end, it wasn't a particularly big or difficult job to switch. Some things take a bit of working round, as they can no linger be done for user groups but must be applied to computers instead. Try it on just one client to begin with.

I'll have a play tomorrow and see how it works, how easy is it to create a profile and add restrictions? Are you able to send me a guide please?

Not on my phone sorry, can't remember the guides that I used but much of the groundwork was laid with our existing PM setup for iPads, so some of the basics apply between the two types and OSs.

No problem, I'll have a look and see what I can figure out. It's never been setup before, it was turned on by my boss and then he couldn't get his head around it and we never bothered to look again... Until now.
