DFS Conflicts

I am trying to migrate from one file server to another, in the process I am also restructuring the route of our shared drive.

 

I am attempting to go from \\server1\shared\Sales Operations (for example) to \\server2\shared\Sales\Sales Operations.

 

I have a DFS membership for Sales to Sales and attempted to set up the DFS replication as above, however due to the sales to sales replication I get the error "The path entered conflicts with another replication folder path"

 

Does anyone know how i can migrate multiple files from source to destination where some folders go to the same location as another replication?

 

I would prefer not to use something like robocopy as I'm trying to pre-stage the migration to limit downtime.

So in your example, Sales1 -> Sales2 is getting blocked as say Sales3<-> Sales2 as well?

 

Where's the other replication from?

 

If in my example Sales3<->Sales2 is already sync'ing, you could add Sales1 into the replication that's already existing. (A triangle etc)

1) \\SERVER1\Shared\Contracts > \\SERVER2\Shared\Legal\Contracts (works fine)

2) \\SERVER1\Shared\Legal > \\SERVER2\Shared\Legal (conflicts due to the above)

 

Tried these replications the other way around (2 before 1) and the same happens.

Also would be useful to know where the files are on the disk, not just the share names

Well... yeah you would get that error... it can't replicate files to a subfolder and a root of a DFS share as there would be a conflict.

 

It would try and replicate the files in \\SERVER2\Shared\Legal\Contracts back to \\SERVER1\Shared\Legal and then confuse itself if it should sync \\SERVER1\Shared\Contracts or \\SERVER1\Shared\Legal\Contracts to SERVER2, if you follow that logic. It would get itself into a right twist.

Basically... set which folders you want to target, but don't try and also target subfolders of a target otherwise, error.

I think you'd have to split them into 2 individual shares for now.

 

So make Share1 - \\SERVER2\Shared\Legal

And share2 - \\SERVER2\Shared\Legal-Contracts etc

 

Then dfs them up.

 

Not sure why you don't want to use robocopy though, as could do the initial seed, then just before you swap over, do a incremental and flick the switch. No dfs required for that

That would work! I have done just that, synced up Contracts under legal and allowed to sync back to the original server then deleted the DFS replication
