I have setup up a dhcp scope 10.217.10.2 - 10.217.11.254 -- 255.255.252.0 with router option set to 10.217.10.1. lostsoul Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 (edited) Is the DHCP server on your "server" vlan? That vlan appears not to have an IP on the switch. Also the vlan you have highlighted, the first host would be 10.217.8.1 with a 22 bit mask. Edited July 27, 2016 by lostsoul 1

I would definitely try and get to grips with sub netting. It's not that difficult. 1
Disease Posted July 27, 2016 Author Posted July 27, 2016 Changed that but still no joy, a bit more info, I have complicated matters more as I am trying to move from a network based on a mask of 255.255.0.0 with no vlans to a vlan based network. My servers are all currently in vlan 1 at the moment, some or using 255.255.0.0 and the DCs including dns and dhcp I have moved to /24 but are still in vlan 1. The broadband switch provided by the LA was our old gateway which is the gateway the servers point to at the moment.
pantscat Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Ok - all devices in VLAN 1 will need to all have the same subnet mask, and to talk to other devices in other subnets/vlans, the same and correct default gateway (which should be the IP of your core switch). Is 10.217.0.31 your DHCP server? Have you created scopes here for the other VLANs? ... and is the default gateway for the VLANs set to the appropriate VLAN IP on the core switch? Ant
Disease Posted July 27, 2016 Author Posted July 27, 2016 10.217.0.31 is the dhcp server, I have set a scope up as above so for example I have a scope set to 10.217.10.2-10.217.11.254 and for vlan 20 the interface ip is set to 10.217.10.1. The core switch is set to 10.217.3.1/24 on vlan 1 with its gateway set to the LA switch which is the 10.217.0.1 gateway. I am unable to ping the core switch for some reason from any machine on the address I set it to. Something has gone wrong somewhere....

You say your dhcp server is on that vlan with an ip of 10.217.0.31. As far as your switch is concerned the DHCP helper is pointing to a network it doesn't know about. For it to work your dhcp server must be in the range 10.217.3.2 - 10.217.3.254, then adjust the helper settings accordingly. 1
Disease Posted July 28, 2016 Author Posted July 28, 2016 What if I want to keep my servers on 10.217.0.x address and my switches on 10.217.3.x or am I better rolling them all into the same range? Is there a way to make the switch know of the 10.217.0.x range ?
lostsoul Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 If it was me I would have management VLAN for the switches and a separate VLAN for servers. You already have those vlans defined on the switch, so why not use them?
pantscat Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Yep, as @lostsoul has said, it looks like VLAN99 is already earmarked for switch management - move the 10.217.3.x range there, and use VLAN1 for your servers.

pantscat Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 You'd need to assign the switch an IP address for that VLAN, and then use that as the default gateway. Given that that the LA router has the first IP in that subnet - you might want to consider changing the switch IPs to be the final address - e.g. x.x.x.254 1
lostsoul Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 As @pantscat says, use the last address in the sub net for your switch. Use the same mask as the router and servers. Set the gateway of last resort as the ip of your router. If your switch doesn't know how to route the traffic, it will be sent to the gateway of last resort. 2
