Broken Acer touchscreen

Hi

 

I had one of our Acer notebooks brought to me which has been dropped and the screen has cracked in one corner. The model is Travelmate B115MP.

 

I've been quoted £175 + vat for a replacement screen (includes LCD screen and digitiser), but the units were only £250 in the first place. The PC is fully functioning apart from the touch funtion in the corner where the crack is.

 

Any idea whether I could replace the screen with a non-touch version? They're available from Acer for £26.

 

Or any other suggestions....

I believe that the screen and digitizer are separate parts on these Acer laptops. Usually the digitizer is around twice the price of the screen, so £175+ is a bit "gougy" (over £75 is high for an hourly rate).

 

When you say "fully functioning" do you mean that the LCD is undamaged? If so, why not just buy the digitizer and replace that? If you need any help just drop me a PM.

The official spares supplier told me that the standard spare is a combined digitiser and LCD. You've interpreted correctly - the LCD is completely intact - I just haven't found a UK supplier for the digitiser by itself or a guide to replacing it. I've put LCD panels in laptops before which has always been straightforward, but never a digitiser - hence my thought about converting it to a non-touchscreen laptop.

Ouch! Expensive.

 

So, if it is sold as a single unit then then the digitizer is bonded to the LCD, which means that you will have a big gaping void around the perimeter if you just replace the LCD, for £26. Unless you can find - separate - 11.6" screen glass that happens to fit perfectly - not likely.

 

Let me make a couple of calls tomorrow and see if I can come up with anything.

Thanks for asking around - I can't find anything either. Just need to decide whether it's worth spending money on.

You could replace it with something like the Acer ES1-131 or B117-MP-C90Q. Both are very similar to the models you have, then you get to keep the old one for spares or office use!
