tj2419 Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 I'm in exactly the same position as the original poster. For those who did jump to GAFE. Did you move shared drives to googles cloud storage? If so how? How did you get on with the duplicates of MS files? Do you still have windows desktops with MS Access etc or gone completely chrome? Cheers
mavhc Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Just don't put MS Office files on google drive at all, just leads to pain. Not noticed a need for MS Access in the current curriculum here, got sqlite command line stuff for Edexcel GCSE CS. I've used Fieldbook before for simple database stuff Plans & pricing · Fieldbook
TwistedHelixis Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Just don't put MS Office files on google drive at all, just leads to pain. We have office files alongside Google files and all seems OK. We have Googles 'Office to drive, save as' so users can save from full blown desktop Office directly in to Google Drive etc and Google seems much better at getting the format correct now.

caffrey Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 I'm still waiting to see if I can map user areas to google drive without some expensive 3rd party solution
mavhc Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Just installed that, doesn't actually do any conversions afaics. Reasons to use Google web office: one version, no conversion problems, versioning, sharing, concurrent editing, no software to install Reasons to use MS web office: basically the same, slightly worse editors, but converts to/from MSOffice with no issue. Reasons to use Google Drive to store MSOffice files: access to files from internet connected computers. Reasons not to: You're missing out on most of the reasons to use it, it's just yet another confusing file store, now with more confusion. What we really want is a Google Drive App that opens MSOffice files in MS web office, seems like it shouldn't be hard with the APIs available. Of course Google web office files are almost just urls, so that would be even easier the other way around, doesn't seem like anyone's done that yet. After that we want to be able to save and load from Google Drive/OneDrive in MS web office/Google web office. And finally we want microsoft to sort out onedrive vs fake sharepoint onedrive
jtotheb Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Google's biggest competitive advantage is that it's been web-only from day one. They don't have to support either the legacy, or hybrid, that Microsoft do with 365. Use Office 365 online on Chromebooks, then you don't have to worry about local app confusion! You can even use Office 365/Azure as your SSO provider for Google Apps and run both with only one set of accounts to sync and manage.
Zoom7000 Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 ^^^ https://tools.google.com/dlpage/driveforoffice Unfortunately doesn't work with Office for Mac
maark Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 win 10 machine and office 2016 proving a PITA - life would be so much easier with a chromebox and google apps. Currently got onenote app and onenote 2016 showing as well as one drive getting mixed up between business and personal account. Trying to share notes for a meeting in outlook - have given up so teachers will have no chance.
