rael74 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Loving new eee pc - got it set up nice in KDE environment. However, I cannot install realplayer on it ... I have downloaded the linux realplayer ".bin" file and followed 'instructions' as per: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=4249 If I'm expected to write command line code every time I want to install anything, or do anything 'advanced' with Linux then I'm out of here! At least with XP I know where the 'C' drive actually is, and can identify and remove the junk I don't want. Can anyone help me install realplayer on the eee (xandros?) before I return to the dark side?

You're going to switch to xp because you can't play a media format thats threatening to go the way of the dodo. good one.

Go back to XP...Go back to XP...Go back to XP... ;-)
kmount Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 If we all stuck to what we know, especially in IT we'd be back in the dark ages. - Be adventurous. Xandros on the eee isn't great package wise, so if I were you, I'd put ubuntu onto it and you will find it a LOT easier to work with with a lot more repositories for software etc.
CyberNerd Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 (edited) If I'm expected to write command line code every time I want to install anything, or do anything 'advanced' with Linux then I'm out of here! The default xandros is completely hackable, but it doesn't include all the tools and software that you would expect from a full operating system. If your going to hack the eeepc you *will* need to learn the command line. When you get used to it you'll probably find a gui just gets in the way of simple tasks anyway. Other systems such as ubuntu are much easier to deal with, but (as with XP) there are things that you need to do on the command line that the gui cannot handle. edit: I edited this because it's actually easier than I expected. you need to be root(Administrator) so on the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) type sudo konqeror in the location bar, type /etc/apt. then right click on the 'sources.list' file and select > open with text editor. Append the following into it. deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org experimental main deb-src http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main back on the command line type sudo apt-get install debian-multimedia-keyring sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install w32codecs The .rm files should now play in mplayer. I tried it on a realplayer test site. This is really quite simple, compared to doing things like hacking registry settings, I'm sure you won't find it too difficult. At least with XP I know where the 'C' drive actually is, and can identify and remove the junk I don't want. unix systems do not have C: drives. the root drive is "/" but drives can be mounted wherever you like. Also you don't need to clean out junk because unlike xp the package manager does this for you Edited February 10, 2008 by CyberNerd
rael74 Posted February 10, 2008 Author Posted February 10, 2008 Actually the BBC Radio (why I wanted Real Player) seems to be working now. It wasn't at first, but I remembered I did an update of software through the console manger thing after switching to the KDE environment. Oh, well, crisis over for now I suppose. I think though I will have a go at putting Ubuntu on it as people suggest. I'm determined to push myself into learning something new here, and not just go over old ground with XP. Thanks for help offered here anyway folks.
CyberNerd Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I hope you get on well with it. Ubuntu is a nice upgrade, A friend showed me his xubuntu on friday night, it looked really cool - (sorry xpost) eeexubuntu is still early stages though, it does definitely need some tweaking and reading the eee forums and howtos. The advantage is that once it works its really easy to deploy as an image. XP is really outdated now, and vista is a bloated piece of sh*t.
kingswood Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 ..before- using Linux isn't in some strange way "geekier" than using any other OS. And XP runs fantastically on the eeePC. Whatever floats your boat really ;-)

kmount Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I see you have a sense of humour I figured working in education, we all had a sense of humour for taking the job! Hopefully meet you on Friday at the LDC?
StewartKnight Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I installed the Linux version of Google earth on my eeepc... ran like a dog On XP it is brilliant... and I can run SIMS Also SKYPE with the camera is a pain on the linux... doodle on XP Plus more h/d available with XP once you've fiddled. It's a shame, I love the Linux distro with the eeepc, but XP works better on it, you can install all the software you use on the network and get it to join the domain and use the domain resources.
