Facebook Will Start Tracking Which Stores You Walk Into

I removed the Facebook app from my phone, and switched to the web version, several months ago due to noticing that it was ruining my phone's battery life (around ~25% less per day just for having the facebook app installed). This made me suspicious that it was doing something like GPS tracking behind the scenes so I' not surprised to read they're planning on doing more location based advertising.

I use Google Now all the time which is basically doing similar things and find it pretty useful for getting local weather updates, travel times to get home , targeted news updated, etc. Somehow it feels more sinister when a social network is doing it in order to deliver targeted ads though.......

I have location services turned off on my iPhone for pretty much everything and also location based ads every time I'm offered them. They only get access to things on my phone when and if they need it.

I have an android tablet and you don't seem to be able to do this to this degree on that.

I ditched the Facebook app a long time ago. Like you, I use the web browser version on my phone. As an added plus, if you choose 'Request desktop site', the messenger function works!

The only downsides are the rough integration with photo uploads and sharing. But it's worth it for keeping a lid on Facebook.

If you haven't already, you may want to recheck your advert settings on the website too. Facebook automatically opted everyone into a new tracking system at the end of last month.

Facebook quietly opts users into off-site ad tracking: here’s how to disable it

Facebook recently began tracking and serving ads to web users who don’t even have an account on the social media site. In doing so, Facebook also quietly changed the ad settings of its users without their consent.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Facebook will target both users and non-users across the web to show them advertisements by tracking them with everything from cookies to “like” buttons.
