[sims] Vanishing Attendance Marks - Something Wrong, or User Error?

Hey Edugeek,

I've had a user responsible for attendance come to me to say that she entered a whole school's worth of attendance for a couple of days, but come back to it to find 50% of it missing.

I'm tempted to say that it was just a failure to hit save, but has anyone ever encountered users reporting attendance just disappearing?

Not without something odder than usual in the land of SIMS. Does database diagnostics run through OK?

 

I'd also lean towards "didn't press save" or "sims client on workstation fell over", but if she's doing attendance on a regular basis it seems odd that 50% of it went missing before she noticed.

 

Does she mean where she fills in the gaps for missing attendance (due to teachers/parents being slack), which could be a small number or are we talking "manual entry of all-school attendance"?

Is there a pattern to the missing marks? i.e. all girls are missing marks, or all PM sessions, or all of 2 classes, etc.

Do they use anything like the SIMS Teacher App or any other program that has the capability to record attendance?

We're a small school, so we don't do classroom attendance, just AM/PM an that gets fed in from a paper copy because the kids turn up at different times during the morning. (Long story.)

 

The pattern was, halfway down the marks for the registration group both Monday and Tuesday were not filled in (this was on Wednesday) for any students below a certain point on the register. The member of staff insists that all Monday's marks were on there to completion, but we do attendance in such a strange way...

 

It gets harder to trust users, the older I get.

 

Is "SIMS Client Fell over" a common thing? Hadn't really noticed it myself, except when we did something strange our end.

Well if she is using the Edit Marks routine then it could fall over, it might 'try' to update a whole school worth of marks, but could timeout, run out of memory, or simply think that it's sent the command and data, but not actually all complete.

I'm sure for large volumes the routine would timeout.
