Hi,

 

We have a school in the MAT that temporarily is on a separate network. I would like to find a way where a CSV file can be uploaded to the internet in a secure location from one site and then download to the other - all automatically. Then vice versa.

 

Does anyone have a any suggestions please?

BitTorrent Sync would be perfect for this. The data would be sent directly rather than going through a third-party too.

That might be quite good. But I am assuming this isn't a secure method? It will be peoples names being transmitted.

 

Have you personally used it yourself?

Yeah I would be tempted to look at a site to site VPN rather than uploading to a file share and the likes! you could probably do this via the network hardware directly or throw up a couple of whatever flavour O/S you like and do it via that.

We don't have the kit to setup a site to site VPN. This would only be temporary anyway until the WAN links go in, so not want to invest in anything.

 

There is a chance that if what I am doing works ell, we would use with other school not in the MAT. So a VPN wouldn't be appropriate in that instance anyway.

Sync is very secure. That's the entire point of the software. Only yourself and the people you are sharing the data with at the other school are going to be able to access it. Because Sync uses TLS for encryption and X.509 certificates for authentication it's not that dissimilar from a VPN.

 

Security and privacy are two of the leading issues for users when transferring important data. Keeping data on-premises makes business and IT leaders feel more secure, but comes with technical challenges when there’s a need to share data externally.   • Sync uses X.509 digital certificates for mutual authentication and validation of file modification requests.
  • Insecure, but easy-to-use tools (like email) can be used to securely sync folders with Sync.
  • Each device has full control over how it communicates with other peers and services can be limited to increase privacy.
  • BitTorrent collects usage statistics from Sync to help us improve the product. This information is sent in the clear so you know what we are gathering.

... from everything I've seen, they've done everything right. This is BitTorrent Sync. And the compelling aspect of it is that it uses no third party. It is not a cloud storage solution. It allows individuals or ad hoc groups to create their own drive synchronization networks using the well-proven BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology, the NAT traversal, I mean, all the things that make BitTorrent work, they've moved over into sort of a standalone sync client that is cross-platform, runs on everything. The security looks very good. We'll get into it in detail. But I think this is a strong contender for a great solution for people whose need fits what this does. So there was so much interest, I thought, well, let's talk about it from a security standpoint...

 

Have you personally used it yourself?

Yes. I use it both at school and at home. It works really well and is surprisingly fast at transferring files. Once setup all they would need to do is edit the CSV and the changes will be automatically transferred back to you (and vice versa).

The CSV will be recreated daily so will need re-syncing every time. But the system will only be in temporary until they join the MAT network.

 

Will see if I can find a free version of what you suggested :) Thanks for the info.
