Why do I have 2 Google Photo folder in Google drive

When I open my personal Google drive it lists 'Google Photos' in the root and this has all my Google Photos inside in one long list of photos, but then if I open 'My Drive' I have another 'Google Photos' folder this also has all my photos but they are in folders named by year.

 

Whats the real difference between these 2 'Google Photos' folders? apart from the photo's being displayed differently

 

It's all a bit confusing.

 

TBH I generally upload important photos to my own photos folder in drive where I can control the folder structure etc but would love an answer to my questions as it makes no sense to me.
