Additional DC

I've discovered a DC in a site I've just taken over is running 2012, not 2012 R2.

 

I'm keen to implement a second DC and want to know if I need to update the schema in 2012 prior to running ADDS on 2012 R2 server.

Schema, yes. You can leave the functional level though. The update is much easier than the old days of 2000 an 2003, and should happen when you're promoting the new DC.
