In spite of what the council say, it sure looks like a very short bike lane.

Mind you, it's better than Birmingham City Council who have closed a whole swag of bike lanes, including a chunk of Sustrans Route 5, to make way for the pathetic 0.7 mile Metro extension.

You're not far from the truth there. My father, before he retired, worked as a road safety officer for many years told me that the reason you see so many cycle lanes that are so short are that there was some obligation to provide cycle routes many years back but no compulsion to have them all joined up.

So, for example all the bits marked up as cycle lanes can be added to a grand total so the council can say 'We in Loamshire have 250 miles of cycle paths!', regardless of the fact non of them are more than 100 meters long.
