Linux Certifications?

Hi,

 

I want to start looking at getting a few Linux certs and learn my away around Linux servers and Networks. I'm thinking about doing the CompTIA Linux+. Is this a good path to choose? Also I notice that it's made up of two exams. Are these exams for each separate LPI qualification? I've seen LPIC-1 and LPIC-2, are these two exams what make up the CompTIA Linux+?

 

Little bit confused, any advice and guidance would be appreciated

Hi - taken the first exam of the CompTIA Linux+, I'll do the second this year sometime. It's two multiple choice exams (now LX103 and LX104 iirc) for the LPIC1 and it's generally rather well thought of (says Googling) PLUS you get the CompTIA cert AND the Suse Linux one AND the LPIC one.

 

I managed to get some demo training in (friend sells ICT certs) but by FAR the best training was looking at the course requirements and asking myself "do I know this inside out?" If the answer is "no" then you WILL have to sit and learn a fair few switches. I made .mp3s of myself reading the common eg grep and dpkg switches and listened to them in the car for a few weeks. Also, have a few VMs and knock them about a bit!

 

Full disclosure, I failed BY ONE QUESTION the first time. It's a fairly tough exam, with some answers being a little bit like right and some questions not counting at all. Second time I didn't feel much like I did better, but I absolutely nailed it. Pressing that final "submit" button I was on the verge of being sick I was so nervous.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm going to pick up some CBT Nuggets videos, look at the exam requirement and just get some hands on experience. They normally have some practice questions on their website as well don't they. I'll have a look at those. It's good to know that LX-103 and LX-104 are definitely the two that I need to do. It was the exam codes and rewarded cert that I was confused about.

It's a bit more enterprise-y and corporate, but have you seriously considered RedHat certifications? They're hard but they're much more respected in the industry and will definitely help you get jobs in future.

I did Linux+ aka LPIC-1 a year or so back. Has proved very useful in terms of getting a solid foundation of Linux skills that I use to support our in-house servers. I deliberately ran those as CLI-only so no GUI cheating for configuration (working on a real server will help your study).

 

The study guide is tough reading cover to cover and often the bits you need are the footnotes at the end rather than all the background! The exam itself you need to do as many practice questions as you can find and memorise lots of commands and switches. Live and breathe it for a few weeks and you should come out the other side with your certs
