Home hub replacement advise

Currently redoing my home network. My current setup.

 

ISP supplied home hub > sophos UTM firewall > switch > WAP

 

I want to replace the locked down home hub with something i have complete control over.

 

I have a standard 48mbps VDSL home connection (fibre to cab, not to house).

The sophos utm supports PPPoA and PPPoE on WAN port.

 

Do i need a modem/router or just a modem?

Any recommendations? Preferably without wifi as wifi is on internal network

My parents setup for fttc came with a modem and a hub (all changed to lovely Cisco now, but still) If the Sophos supports PPoE then I suspect all you'll need is a modem and your connection details for the PPoE on the UTM?

Its a standard ISP issue cheapo modem/router/WAP all in one. I think as this is still going over phone line in house i would need to use PPPoA?

Looked around for stand alone modems but can only find adsl2 ones capable of up to 24mbps, not vdsl 48mbps like i need.

Consider getting a BT Openreach one? The old style fitted ones before VDSL got integrated into the hubs.

If you get a BT Openreach Huawei EchoLife HG612 it can be hacked via a firmware update to give some interesting stats. I am not sure of other VDSL modems that are tweak friendly.

The other version of the Openreach requires a soldering kit to allow you to put open firmware on it.

Long story short, I'm in the same situation. I've got a Draytek Vigor router with a built in VDSL modem which should be excellent - a sort of pro-sumer level device, but it drops the connection every couple of minutes so is unusable. It was an eBay purchase - trying to decide whether to risk another one or buy new.

 

The trouble is, most of the high street kit is focused around the wireless performance which is of no interest. The connection is stable on the junk router that EE provided and I had the same problem when BT was my ISP, so I'm guessing the Draytek router is faulty. Unfortunately the EE router doesn't play nicely with my Unifi APs.... At the minute, I'm using the EE router as a modem and the Draytek for routing functions. It's pretty rubbish - lots of lag.

A bit more googling, looks like the cisco Cisco 887VA may do the job. Dont think i need a router as utm can support this.

Mine's a 2850 (now unsupported) and wasn't bought from an authorised reseller, so they weren't interested

 

I re-flashed the firmware a couple of times and got the same result.

 

Would be very interested in trying another one if there's one on offer Needs to be one with a built in VDSL modem - not trying to be fussy, just wouldn't get very far with it otherwise!

Have just been looking at 867s and 887s on eBay! (Although the integrated router version). Slightly concerned about configuring one - I've seen it done and read the CCNA book about 15 years ago when I was thinking of heading in that direction - but it's definitely not something I'd be confident starting.
