Would running DBATTACH in sims for a backup close peoples connection to SIMS while it carries out a backup?

 

looking to run a discover update at very short notice and want to avoid kicking people out of SIMS as we only have a handful using the discover application.

An SQL backup doesn't take the database off-line. It's perfectly fine to take a backup while the system is in use. Of course, changes made after the backup will be lost if you need to restore it.

Make sure that everybody is out when you upgrade though. Upgrades often put the database into single-user-mode. If somebody else steals this single-user slot, you can get into a horrendous pickle.

i have already done the sims release upgrade (with everyone out) but i didnt have a chance to run the discover upgrade at the same time which is what i would usually do.

From memory this can be deployed without having to remove people from SIMS (only about 10 installs of discover across the whole site)

When I used to do SIMS upgrades through SOLUS 2, rather than putting in to single user mode, I use to disable the TCP connection option with the SQL Configuration manager - this meant that only the server could only connect to the database, and no clients.
