Morning all,

 

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. We've bought 100 Microsoft Surface 3's for our teaching staff to use as a teaching and learning tool.

 

Problem we're having, is that if we change the keyboard to UK the handwriting feature for the pen becomes disabled. Any suggestions on how to re-enable it?

Thanks for that. We've tried downloading the required language pack (simply English (UK)) and fllowing the instructions but sadly the issue remains the same, as soon as we turn off US keyboard, we lose the ability for handwriting recognition. Looking at Optional features in settings, I've got English (US) Handwriting installed but not UK/GB but I don't seem to be able to install it either.

no consolation - it's not just you we have the same issue, found nothing on the web anywhere. - going to try my contact at Microsoft, will post his response.

The response back was to make sure all the language settings are set to UK which I had already done, waiting for a further update.

'Go to the Settings app, Time & Language, Region, and make sure the region says United Kingdom and the language says English UK. Click English UK, set as default, then click options, and make sure the keyboard is UK QWERTY. Restart.'

 

I have also tried installing the uk language cab file running lpksetup, but it just tells me I can't install it as I guess it thinks it's already installed.

 

I have noticed my speech settings are set to US and I'm unable to change them to anything else, I guess that could be the problem as all language settings need to be set for the same region.

 

Do you have the ability to change the speech settings to UK Iain?

Region is set to UK and the only language option is English (UK), keyboard is set to UK QWERTY. Still got the same problem :-(

 

I've also done as you did and tried to install the cab file and got the same error. I've got the same problem as you in that I cannot change the speech settings from anything other than US. As a bit of extra info on this, if you go to settings, system, apps & features, manage optional features I can see that I have the English (US) handwriting pack installed. I believe I need the UK one installing in order for the UK language settings to work, but also believe that this should be installed when the language pack is installed. However, if I then select add a feature it tells me there are no features to install. Additionally, if I look in control panel, language, options it tells me that the language pack isn't available.

 

I thought I'd try another language to see what happens with that, so added italian as an option, however, it looks like the language pack doesn't download. Everything I've read suggests that when you add a language pack, it will be downloaded and added along with the handwriting pack. But I get no message telling me that the pack is being downloaded.

Do you guys have a WSUS server?

 

I found that Windows would never download any language packs or speech file while I was connected to a WSUS server.

 

Disabled WSUS via the registry and then it allowed me to download the Language packs and speech files, then re-enabled the WSUS server.

Ok, I disabled WSUS in the registry, rebooted and ran windows updates straight off the Internet. hey presto I then had the ability to install the language packs and change the speech settings to uk. Now just need to get them working through sccm.

I'm just looking at SCCM now, I think it could be this update: Lang Pack (Language Features) Feature On Demand for X64 [en-GB]

 

I'll have a play with our SCCM and push this update and the language pack to a machine and see if it installs the speech features :)

last week we tried kb3109596 but it would not install. (through sccm)

 

Just trying that now, my Windows 10 images have all the features installed so I don't have to mess with this anymore. I suppose that is a little difficult to do on a Surface device though :/

did you manage to get this working through SCCM Iain?

 

No not with SCCM, I'm now looking at rebuilding our Windows 10 image and recapturing it having manually done the language pack install :-(
