Sign out problem

On a lab computer, I removed the reboot and shutdown options from the menu by GPO to prevent students from doing anything else than closing the session, but the parent menu "Alimentation" in french or "Power" in english stays there and shows empty when clicked on. This creates confusion for new windows 10 users. They can't find the "Sign out" option hidden under the user name at the top of the start menu and they think the computer is broken because the Power menu is empty so they just push the power button, sometimes for more than 5 seconds, and I don't like that.

 

Is there any way (other than using a third party menu solution) to remove the Power menu completely or make it easier for users to find how to sign out?

I wouldn't expect so. Windows 10's start menu is a little buggy. For example, you can't remove the Settings icon, either.

 

Why would you not want to give them the option to shut down? Updates are applied during shutdown. No shutdown, no updates, is bad.

We restart the computers at night so updates are applied at that time. During the day, we don't want any computer to shut down.

Can I ask how you've managed to do that? It was my understanding that command-line shutdowns did not apply any updates, therefore a scheduled task or a network-wide shutdown /r would not install them?

I haven't looked at that for Windows 10 yet, but it seems to work fine on Windows 7 for me. We're still only in testing phase for Win10 so not everything has been taken care of yet.

Good idea, thanks! Just not as clean as I would like. I wish there was a way to remove the empty power menu, it looks silly really.

No, as far back as Win7. If I need to bounce a machine for any reason, but it has updates pending, I'll always use WIN+R, shutdown /r /f, as it doesn't apply them that way, whereas Restart from the Start Menu does apply them.

I had to go check to see what's up. We use WSUS to schedule and force updates + reboot at a specific time.

How do you force the updates? I thought they would only install at the specified time through GPO or when the PC is shutdown?

They do install at a specific time, and then later we restart the computer. Im not sure I get your question, sorry. Can you be more specific?
