Ruckus Wi-Fi and VLANs not working

Hi everyone,

 

we have recently added three more Wi-Fi VLANs (BYOD Students, Staff and Guest) and they all work in most parts of the school, except in two locations. We've checked the configuration on the core switches, Ruckus Controller and the edge HP2810 switches and not managed to pin point the problem. Compared the config with other HP2810 switches in working aeas and it;s identical, except the names of the switches and VLAN IP address.

 

When trying to access the new Wi-Fi SSIDs in the two buildings where they are failing to connect,we don't seem to be getting an IP address on the devices, it does show the devices as connected on Ruckus Controller, but no IP is assigned, therefore it fails to connect to the new SSIDs (all of the three new ones). The main original Wi-Fi SSID works though. Any suggestion and advice is welcome and thanks in advance.

I'd look at vlan configuration. The ruckus has two modes, to route the traffic at the ap's switch, or route the traffic back through the zone director.

If you are routing traffic at the AP each switch needs the vlan configuration to match.

 

You said the only difference was vlan IP addresses. I'm not sure how HP works but on my cisco I have one IP per vlan at the core. There is no IP assigned to the vlan at the edge.

 

The two settings I'd look at next are;

Are the vlans allowed across the trunk back to the core?

Do you have the equivalent of IP helper configured on those vlans?

Those are the two things we've checked and all looks OK; trunk to core and IP helper.

If the new VLANs are working in most parts of the school then it's safe to rule out your Ruckus configuration (unless you are using AP groups with overriding VLAN tags) and your core switch.

I would focus on looking at the edge switches in the locations of failure.

 

Does the client fail to obtain an IP address if you use Ethernet and untag the VLAN on a port at the edge?

Double check that the VLANs are untagged (trunked) on the uplink ports.

Hi Thanks for your message. We're note using AP groups. I have compared the edge switch in the working location and the not working location, I found that in the non working there an entry "no ip address"and this is the order of the show config output: vlan 104, name "BOD-Student", no ip address, tagged 1,15,18-20,23-24, exit. No mention of trunk TRK1 or anything else.

When he says trunked he doesn't mean port aggregation. Trunked can be a confusing term as it means two different things on Cisco and HP equipment. We use HP equipment and I have the VLANs tagged on the 3 SSIDs we use. When your talking about edge switches they generally don't need an IP address in each VLAN, but just one in the management VLAN unless you are using some kind of routing on them? If you want to post a full config of two switches or send me them I'd be happy to look at them as I have a similar setup. Edited May 3, 2016 by ChrisH
