One department has a large excel sheet used to keep assessment data. They have reported a problem that I wouldn't have believed, but then they showed me the problem in action.

What they do is:

  1. Place a copy of the offending spreadsheet onto the share in question
  2. Make an edit
  3. Save and close the file

The file then disappears before your eyes. I thought that was the end of it but then I noticed something (else) that was odd. There are a number of files on the share with 8-letter file names that appear random. No extension. These seem to be the missing spreadsheets.

One fact that may be relevant: this share was recently added to a DFS replication group.
